Bendigo Business Council supports City's car park announcement
The Bendigo Business Council has thrown its support behind the City of Greater Bendigo's intention to build a multi-story car park complex in central Bendigo.
Bendigo Business Council executive officer Kevin de Vries said today "Ensuring there is an adequate and appropriate mix of car parking for our city is a key to its ongoing and future growth."
"The centre of Bendigo will continue to be a hub for retail, professional, civic and education services as well as a transport interchange." Mr de Vries said. "A multi-story car park will help to relieve current car parking pressures and provide for future CBD development."
"The BBC believes there are three essential elements for the economic and social health of the Bendigo CBD - the right environment, the right accessibility and the right promotion. This proposal is part of ensuring the ‘right accessibility'."
"The Edward Street location is convenient to the Bendigo Bank and DHS buildings, Target, Mitchell Street and Marketplace; it will benefit office workers, retail staff, business clients and shoppers. It will also serve rail patrons and the growing number of professional offices south-west of the CBD."
Commenting on the inclusion of commercial space within the proposal, Mr de Vries said that this was a financial reality for funding the project. "Including retail or office space in the building has a three-fold benefit. It makes the building more economically viable; the streetscape safer and more interesting; and provides additional commercial space for our growing city."
"The BBC celebrates today's announcement and commends the Council and City staff on their decision to proceed. We look forward to continuing to work with the City of Greater Bendigo and its Council to address matters of business and community concern and further grow our regional city."
