Appointment of Julia Gillard as PM a significant day for Australia

The Bendigo Business Council has noted the election of Julia Gillard as Australia's Prime Minister and the smooth transfer of power as a proud day for Australian democracy.

"The election of Julia Gillard as the 27th Prime Minister of Australia is a significant day for the nation." BBC executive officer Kevin de Vries said today. "It demonstrates that gender is no barrier to achievement in politics, business or public life. We wish Prime Minister Gillard and her deputy Wayne Swan every success in their roles in leading Australia."

"The BBC hopes that the mood in the Labor Party for additional consultation extends beyond the Caucus room and results in greater dialogue and negotiation with business and industry. Contentious matters affecting business include the Emissions Trading Scheme, the Resource Super Profits Tax and ongoing taxation reform. Uncertainty around these issues is affecting decision making, employment and business investment." Mr de Vries said.

"The Bendigo Business Council hopes that the Australian community will be given sufficient time to examine the policies of Ms Gillard and Mr Swan prior to the pending election. This would allow for an informed assessment of the policy differences of the major parties to be made at the ballot box."
